Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay was on the 24th of August on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise at the age of an infant. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to study literature for art as well as theater in the daylight. DuVernay quickly became enthralled after showing her that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's examples of the power of art as an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother with a conscience for social issues, and instilled DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family has lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, was later the inspiration to make a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she earned qualifications in English and African American Studies. As studying, DuVernay was interested in creating for television journalism. She began her career as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to watch the home of one of the members of the jury, and then go through their garbage. In the course of her work, she became dissatisfied with journalism and moved into the publicity business. DuVernay joined a small studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. She was promoted to the position and set up her own PR company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Her agency launched numerous lifestyle and promotion networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
